Police have arrested two youngsters on Sunday in connection with the murder of an elderly woman at Thottukad near Mathur here on February 13.
The woman was allegedly murdered for her gold earrings weighing half a gram. The arrested have been identified as Mohandas (19) and Vipin (25). The youths, who hail from the same locality, have been hiding at Namakkal in Tamil Nadu to evade arrest.
The woman Madhavi was living alone at her house at Thottukad. Her body was found charred beyond recognition inside her home on February 13. Police earlier thought it was a case of suicide by pouring kerosene over the body and setting ablaze using match box. No circumstantial evidence related to murder was found on the premises.
But it was only later that relatives found her earrings missing. Based on a suspicion, police began to keep a watch on all jewellery shops in the region.
Finally, they found the earrings that were sold by the two youths at a jewellery shop at Vadakkancherry. Based on the details provided by the shop owner, police tracked the suspects who had shifted to Nammakkal after the incident. They were taken to Palakkad on Sunday and will be produced before a local court on Monday.
