A mini-lorry carrying fish was hit by a passenger train after the lorry attempted to cross an unmanned level crossing before the train passed the tracks near Ramapuram in Kayamkulam around 6.30 p.m. on Saturday.
The passengers in the lorry, Ranjith and Suresh, were injured and shifted from the damaged lorry to the Kayamkulam Taluk Hospital by locals who rushed to the spot upon hearing the loud sound of the collision. The Ernakulam-Kollam Passenger train, which was involved in the accident, also sustained damages to the engine.
Rail traffic, which was disrupted for around two hours after the accident, was restored around 8.30 p.m., according to the police.
This is the second accident at unmanned level crossings in the district in recent times. On September 15, an autorickshaw driver was killed when he attempted to race across a level crossing at Punnapra before the train came along. While passengers in the train had a lucky escape on Saturday, the September accident saw school children, who were about to be picked up from school by the rickshaw driver, having a providential escape.
