The Kerala State Commission for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (KSCSCST) has registered a suo motu case against the forcible eviction of tribal people from their land at Mampad in Malappuram district.

A press note issued here said this was being done on the basis of a letter given by the DFO to Revenue officials.

The Revenue officials refused to receive land tax from the tribespeople. The tribespeople had been in uninterrupted possession of the land for nearly a half a century.

This land is also protected by the Forest Right Act.

Commission chairman P.N. Vijayakumar is scheduled to visit the tribal settlement at Mampad on September 23.

He would also visit the Forest and Revenue offices concerned.

Review of Act

With the cooperation of the Chief Conservator of Forests, the implementation of the Forest Right Act would be reviewed.

Under the pretext of protecting private forest, vested forest, and revenue forest, the rights of the tribespeople should not be allowed to be taken away, the press note issued here added.
