The State government is seriously thinking of launching a special project to take care of the needs of patients who need lifelong medical care, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has said.

Commissioning the newly built modern Out Patient Block at the Kottayam Government Medical College hospital here, Mr Vijayan said modernisation programmes would be expanded to other government medical college hospitals also.

Problems

This would go a long way in mitigating the problems faced by the patients who were increasingly depending on the public health dispensation system for their medical needs.

The private sector hospitals charge differently for various organ transplant surgeries. “However, the cost of organ transplant at the government medical colleges is lower than the lowest charged by the private hospitals,” he said.

In remembrance

Remembering those who had laid down lives during their service in the medical sector, the Chief Minister said that the public health system in Kerala could feel proud of those who had laid down their lives while serving the patients.

According to Mr. Vijayan, the dedicated work of the medical, paramedical and other staff along with the support they received from the government were the core strengths of Kerala’s public health dispensation system.

He said that the alumni from the State government medical colleges could do a lot in strengthening their alma mater.

K.K. Shylaja, Minister for Health, presided.

K. Raju, Minister for Forests and Wild Life, was the guest of honour.

K. Suresh Kurup, Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan, C.K. Asha (all MLAs), District Collector B.S. Thirumeni, Vaikom Viswan, V.N. Vasavan and others spoke.

Trauma care centre

The Chief Minister inaugurated the ₹30-crore trauma care centre, the new gynecology OP section, hemophilia ward, and the new mortuary block on the occasion.
