The relatives of Hari C. Nair, third engineer with MV Savina Caylyn, which was hijacked by suspected Somali pirates on Tuesday, are waiting for information from authorities on the developments.
According to Sreeraj, Mr. Nair's younger brother, they are in constant touch with the Defence Ministry. Mr. Nair's wife, mother and brother had sought the intervention of Union Defence Minister A.K. Antony on Tuesday itself.
According to information reaching here, the Italian-flagged oil tanker along with the 22-member crew, 17 of them Indians, were seized by suspected Somali pirates who arrived in a skiff nearly 800 km off the Indian coast in the Arabian Sea.
Of the 17 Indians, two are from Kerala, Mr. Sreeraj said. The pirates took the tanker after sustained firing of small arms and rocket-propelled grenades.
The tanker was going to Pasir Gudang in Malaysia from Bashyer in Sudan when it came under attack.
According to Mr. Sreeraj, his brother had called when they had come out of the Somali waters and said he would be arriving home by the end of this month.
