Mallya and NPA woes
Almost all nationalised banks have recorded a greater rate of NPA this financial year because of the non-remittance of overdue to loan accounts. The customers rebuke the bankers for forcing common customers to pay up dues while letting off corporate consumers such as Vijay Mallya.
Mallya’s issue has sure sent a wrong message among public leading to banks recording a high NPA figures.

Take care of the machines
The automatic ticket vending machine installed at Pettah Railway station in Thiruvananthapuram city often goes out of order. It was useful for a large number of commuters coming to the station, and had helped in avoiding long queues at the ticket counter before the arrival of trains.
The touch screen kiosk installed at the station is also not working. It is a pity that the station is facing neglect from all sides. The Railway authorities are requested to make arrangements for repairing the machines.

Troublesome joint
The time allotted for vehicles to cross the Vetturoad junction where NH-47 and Kazhakuttam-Venjaramoodu bypass join is only 10 seconds. Moreover, there is a deep pit along the road now after the road was dug up for laying optical fibre cables. This poses a huge hurdle and allows only one or two vehicles to turn towards the bypass and proceed towards Kaniyapuram within the allotted time.
Traffic jams and accidents have become a mainstay here. The national highway authorities and the traffic police should look into this problem soon.

Time to ban fireworks
In a State like Kerala, use of pyrotechnics involving a fortune is unethical and dangerous, so is the Puttingal temple tragedy shows.
The accident points to the callousness of those at the helm of affairs in the temple administration and in the district administration.
Also, temple festivals, it is seen, are not about spirituality, selflessness or charity. The huge money involved shows they merely project human greed.
The amount could be utilised for welfare measures of at least the temples if not society. Article 25 of the Constitution of India guarantees right to freedom of religion, and this freedom should necessarily not be misused in matters of public safety. Taking a cue from the tragedy, this is the right time to ban fireworks and parading of caparisoned elephants in temples during festival times.
