The number of deaths resulting from monsoon-related accidents during the last four days rose to 12 in the State with the death of a child in Kottayam district on Saturday.

The child, aged two-and-a-half years, was washed away by flood waters. A man went missing at Mannarkkad in Palakkad district.

As many as 113 villages across the State had been hit by heavy rain and floods. Eight houses were destroyed and 242 houses damaged, causing a loss of about Rs.27 lakh. A bridge collapsed on Friday night near Adoor.

It rained heavily in Pathanamthitta, Kottayam and Kozhikode districts. Several areas in western parts of Kottayam district are flooded. In Alappuzha, 178 people were shifted to safer places. About ten relief camps are functioning in Kottayam district.

Reports reaching here estimated a crop loss of Rs.3.60 crore on Saturday. Crop in 237.15 hectares had been destroyed or damaged. With these, the total loss from damage to houses and crops during the season rose to Rs.6.20 crore.

Over 700 houses were damaged and 31 houses destroyed during the period. More than 400 people are staying in relief camps. Crops in 549 hectares suffered damage in four days.
