Believers in Central Travancore observed Maundy Thursday as part of the Holy Week with religious fervour on Thursday, recalling the day when Jesus Christ had the last supper with his disciples and established the Holy Eucharist.
The Maundy Thursday observance at various churches in the district included celebration of the Holy Eucharist and washing-the-feet ritual.
The Metropolitan Archbishop of Thiruvalla, Thomas Mar Coorilos, was the chief celebrant of the special Maundy Thursday service held at the St. George Malankara Catholic Church at Chengaroor, near Mallappally, in the afternoon.
Youhanon Mar Chrysostum, Metropolitan of the Pathanamthitta diocese of the Malankara Catholic Church, washed the feet of faithful at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church at Kumbazha in the afternoon. Zacharias Mar Anthonios, Metropolitan of the Kollam diocese of the Malankara Orthodox Church, washed the feet of believers at the St. Paul’s and St. Peter’s Church at Parumala.
Mon. Justin Pazhepparambil, Vicar General, was the chief celebrant of the Maundy Thursday service at the Mary Matha Feronah Church in Pathanamthitta. Bishop K.P. Yohannan, Metropolitan of the Believers Church, washed the feet of the faithful as part of the Maundy Thursday observance held at the Believers’ Church St. Thomas Cathedral at Chumathra, near Thiruvalla.
Good Friday
The Good Friday in the Holy Week commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and Easter Sunday, the day of His resurrection. Different parishes have made elaborate arrangements to take out Way of the Cross processions in the district on Friday.
