First Vice-Chancellor of a varsity to be removed by the Governor in Kerala
Mahatma Gandhi University Vice-Chancellor A.V. George was dismissed from service on Monday by Governor Sheila Dixit who is also the Chancellor of the university.
The dismissal order was handed over to Dr. George at the Raj Bhavan in the morning. With this, he becomes the first Vice-Chancellor in Kerala to be so removed by the Chancellor.
According to Raj Bhavan sources, Dr. George went to the Governor’s official residence with a letter of resignation which Raj Bhavan officials refused to accept. Some time later, he was handed the dismissal order.
Dr. George also submitted a signed form acknowledging the receipt of the Governor’s order, officials said. On December 21 last, the then Governor, Nikhil Kumar, had issued a show-cause notice to Dr. George on a case accusing the latter of misrepresenting his qualifications in the curriculum vitae (CV) he presented to the government to be considered as a candidate for the post of Vice-Chancellor
The Higher Education Department maintained that Dr. George not only misrepresented his qualification in his CV, but also submitted more than one such document to the search committee and had claimed that he was functioning as the head of the department of environmental sciences at the Central University in Kanuur and that he had been with the postgraduate department of Geology at Christ College, Irinjalakkuda, for 30 years. The department contested these claims and a report was submitted to the Governor for further action.
