Puzhathi panchayat bordering Kannur municipality is trouble over the killing of stray dogs by allegedly injecting poison.

A social activist Sushama Prabhu on Sunday lodged a police complaint accusing the panchayat of ordering the killing of several stray dogs in the panchayat on Saturday. The complaint said that the killing of stray dogs was a clear violation of law and called on the police to register a case under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act against those who ordered the killing. She alleged that the dogs were culled under the instruction of the panchayat authorities.

The panchayat authorities, however, denied any role in the killing of stray dogs. Panchayat president N. Ramakrishnan said that the local people in the panchayat ordered the killing of the stray dogs because of the menace, he said.
