A footbridge constructed by the Pathanamthitta municipality across the Achencoil river at Illathu kadavu, near here, is getting ready for inauguration.

A. Sureshkumar, municipal chairman, said work on the much-sought after footbridge, linking the municipality with the adjoining Pramadom grama panchayat, began 18 months ago. The municipality took up the foot bridge project following persistent demand for the same from the local people, he said.

Mr. Sureshkumar said the 45-metre long, 1.5-metre wide steel structure had been constructed at a cost of Rs.44 lakh.

The Steel Industries Limited, Kerala, (SILK) undertook the construction work. The footbridge would be of great help to the people residing on either banks of the river Achencoil. Though the project was conceived 15 years ago, the civic body could launch the same only 18 months ago, Mr. Sureshkumar said.

He said the project had been implemented in a time-bound fashion and it would be commissioned in November. Mr. Sureshkumar said the Revenue Department had contributed Rs.20 lakh to the bridge project, besides the Rs.10 lakh from Anto Antony, MP’s local area development fund and Rs.3 lakh by the Pramadom grama panchayat.
