Cruelty against elephants alleged

February 11, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:43 am IST - Thrissur:

Thrissur-based Heritage Animal Task Force, in a memorandum, complained that the Guruvayur Devaswom was engaging its elephants in festival parades without proper rest.

In its complaint, the Task Force noted that Peethambaran, an elephant of the Guruvayur Devaswom, ran amok during a temple festival at Thaloor on February 6 and attacked another elephant Pambadi Sundaran. Both elephants suffered injuries. Another elephant Valiya Kesavan, which was paraded without proper rest for many festivals recently, has fallen ill due to constipation, it noted.

The Heritage Task Force asked the Chief Wild Warden to intervene in the issue and take appropriate action.
