The Communist Party of India (CPI) district committee has called on Shashi Tharoor, MP, to resign his parliament seat in the light of the chargesheet filed by the Delhi Police accusing him of domestic violence and abetting the suicide of his wife Sunanda Pushkar.
A pressnote quoting CPI district secretary G.R. Anil said Mr. Tharoor’s effort to sabotage the case against him with the help of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had drawn a blank.
“His continuation as an elected representative would be an affront to a democratic society. He will have to step down and face the law,” Mr. Anil said. He also urged the Congress leadership to make its stand clear on the issue.
Chennithala’s response
Meanwhile, Leader of the Opposition Ramesh Chennithala said the chargesheet filed by the Delhi Police against Shashi Tharoor was politically motivated. In a pressnote issued here, he said the people would see through the BJP’s gameplan to defame Congress leaders.
In Alappuzha, former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy described the chargesheet by the Delhi Police accusing Shashi Tharoor of abetting the suicide of his wife as ‘political revenge’ by the BJP. “The case is a conspiracy by the BJP to tarnish the image of Shashi Tharoor with an eye on the Thiruvananthapuram parliament seat,” Mr. Chandy said.
Meanwhile BJP State general secretary M.T. Ramesh demanded the MP’s resignation.
