The Chengannur legislator, P.C. Vishnunath, was allegedly manhandled by Communist Party of India (Marxist) activists near Mannar here on Sunday.

Mr. Vishnunath, talking to The Hindu over telephone, said he was on his way to inaugurate a public road when over 50 CPI (M) activists blocked his vehicle. Their contention was that they would not allow him to inaugurate the road, which they alleged had overshot construction estimates. The MLA refused to return without inaugurating the road, and got out of the car and sat on the road protesting the blockade.

“This was when some of the activists manhandled me and an elderly Kudumbasree worker too,” he said. The issue, he said, was mere politics since there were several Kudumbasree workers and several other political party representatives with him on the way to the function.

Mr. Vishnunath, who got himself admitted in the Mavelikara Government Hospital, has lodged a complaint and police are investigating.
