A four-member Central team led by Vumlunmang Vualnam, Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Home Affairs, on Sunday visited flood-affected areas in Kuttanad and Ambalappuzha taluks of the district.
Later, Revenue Minister Adoor Prakash, who accompanied the team, said the State would submit a new memorandum to the Union government on the monsoon-related calamities in the State. “The earlier memorandum had asked for an assistance of Rs.498 crore. More losses have occurred after that, especially destruction of village roads, National Highways, and other roads. A total of 498 relief camps were opened in Alappuzha district itself. There has been widespread loss to agriculture also,” he said.
He said the Central team had interacted with people in relief camps and seen the real situation there.
In reply to a question, the Minister said Mr. Vualnam had said during the visit that what the State had said in its memorandum was correct. He said that this time, the Central team had arrived earlier to take stock of the situation.
The team will visit Kottayam and Pathanamthitta on Monday and will be in Thiruvananthapuram on Monday evening. “They will hold discussions with Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, and Revenue, Irrigation, Public Works, and Agriculture Ministers in Thiruvananthapuram at 8.30 a.m. on Tuesday.”
Visit to Thrissur
A team from the Centre visited Thrissur district on Sunday to assess the monsoon calamity.
The district administration submitted to the team a report that pegged the losses in the district at Rs.88.54 crore. Details of sector-wise damage were given to the team at a meeting at the Collectorate.
