Home Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan has said that the government has initiated all efforts to alleviate the agony of the people living in areas affected by heavy rain and flooding in the district.

The Minister who reached Kannur on Tuesday to attend the all-party peace meeting rushed to the flooded areas at Iritty and nearby areas including the Pazhassi irrigation dam site. The government would do whatever it can to ensure relief to the people who were affected by the monsoon-related disaster that left many areas inundated by flood water as heavy rain continued to lash the areas. He said he rushed to the affected areas in the morning as instructed by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy. He was accompanied by Agricultural Minister K.P. Mohanan and local MLA Sunny Joseph.

Mr. Radhakrishnan said that district administration officials and police personnel were involved in an exemplary work for rescue and evacuation operation. Country boats were pressed into service for evacuation of people marooned by flood water, he said adding that steps were also under way for supplying free ration for people affected by the disaster. He said that the government had already sought the help of Navy for assisting the rescue operations. A control room was also opened for the co-ordination of operations, he added.
