Absconding Mumbai blasts convict arrested in Kannur

The Kannur Town police arrested an absconding convict in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts here on Wednesday.

Manojkumar Bhavarlal Gupta, 48, alias Munnabhai, the 24th accused, who was sentenced to life imprisonment, was arrested at Athazhakunnu in the early hours, police said.

The trial court awarded him life term, but he was freed after 14 years on special consideration.

Since his release, he had been living in a Mumbai suburb as a real-estate agent. The Central Bureau of Investigation had been in pursuit of him ever since he failed to surrender after the Supreme Court in March this year upheld the conviction of actor Sanjay Dutt and revoked the release of the life-term convicts, ordering instead that they be jailed till their death.

As he failed to return to jail, a Mumbai court issued a warrant against him.

The police said he married a woman at Athazhakunnu in 2008, with the help of an acquaintance he made after his release. Three children were born of this marriage. He visited his wife when the last child was born a couple of months ago.

The police said his wife’s house had come under surveillance since the CBI informed the district police of his links. When the police learnt about his arrival, a team, led by Sub-Inspector Sanal Kumar, surrounded the house and arrested him.

The police said he would soon be handed over to the CBI.
