Alert residents of Belur stopped a woman who was attempting to sell her nine-month-old baby boy for Rs. 2,000 owing to poverty, with the help of the local police and officers of the Women and Child Development Department.

Veena (30) was found begging on the streets of the town on Wednesday. She was seen approaching people requesting them to take the baby for Rs. 2,000.

A few youths inquired about her whereabouts and to what prompted her to sell the child.

Hailing from Hosadurga, Veena said she was married to one Ganesh a couple of years ago. Ganesh died of ill health seven months ago, and with her parents having passed away a few years ago, her in-laws sent her away.

With no source of income, she moved from one place to another begging. She told the police that she decided to sell the baby because she was worried he would not get nutritious food and other facilities if it stayed with her. K.S. Sarala, Child Development and Programme Officer, told The HIndu , “We have kept her at Santvana Kendra in Belur. Both mother and baby have been provided with food and proper care. We are collecting more details from her.”
