The Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Commission has started an inquiry into over six lakh cases pertaining to issuance of fake caste certificates, commission chairman Basanna Chalvadi has said.
He told presspersons here recently that in most of the cases, the petitioners had complained about taluk-level officials issuing fake caste certificates either to get jobs or benefits under welfare schemes meant for the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.
The government had also asked the commission to recommend action against those officials found guilty of issuing fake caste certificates, he added.
The commission had also received complaints about local administrative bodies diverting funds meant for development schemes for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.
The district-level committees chaired by deputy commissioners had been formed to look into the matter.
They had been given powers to file cases against officials responsible for diverting funds. There had been complaints about lack of funeral grounds, drinking water supply to slums and delay in issuing title deeds too.
He said the commission would submit a report on vacant backlog posts and incidents of delay in promotions to the government next month.
