An operation to capture trouble-making wild elephants is expected to start in parts of Alur and Sakleshpur taluks on Thursday with 10 trained elephants reaching a camp set up at Madihalli in Alur taluk on Wednesday.
They have been brought from camps at Nagarhole, K. Gudi and Dubare. Appu Rao, Deputy Conservator of Forests, told The Hindu that nearly 40 forest guards and mahouts too had reached the camp. “We have started locating the whereabouts of elephants,” he said.
Coffee plantation workers returned home early on Wednesday to help the forest staff begin their operations.
The State government has given permission to capture 25 elephants in Alur and Sakaleshpur taluks and two have been caught and shifted to elephant camps.
Village residents have intensified their protest demanding capture of elephants in the wake of deaths due to elephant attacks. A man was trampled to death in Alur taluk on Tuesday.
