Six members of the banned Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), who were found guilty of planning terror attacks in different parts of Karnataka, were awarded life imprisonment by a Fast Track Court here on Monday.
All the six LeT activists were found guilty by the court on Saturday and the judge, V.R. Revankar, sentenced them in a packed court hall in the City Civil Court complex.
Mohammed Razur, Afsar Pasha, Ibrahim Sab Chopdar, Noorullah Khan, Mohammed Irfan and Nijamuddin alias Munna were convicted of waging war against the country.
While the convicts displayed no emotion as the sentence was read out, they did express their disappointment with the judgment.
The six were arrested by the Bangalore police when they were investigating the attack on the Indian Institute of Sciences in December 2005, in which an IIT professor from New Delhi was killed. They were arrested in 2006 from different locations in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, and huge quantities of firearms and other materials seized.
The city police have announced a reward of Rs. 1 lakh for the team that arrested the six.
Death penalty sought
Meanwhile, Special Public Prosecutor A.K. Seetharam said he would request the State government to file an appeal demanding the death penalty for the six.
“Charges against the accused were not trivial. I will also write to the government to question the acquittal of the seventh accused [Chand Pasha],” he told The Hindu.
