Karnataka highways: Proposal to upgrade SH 17 as NH

The State government has urged the Union government to upgrade the State highways between Bangalore and Mysore and Madikeri and Mangalore as national highways to ensure better maintenance and smooth flow of traffic.

Addressing presspersons here on Friday, Minister for Public Works H.C. Mahadevappa said that the government can save money by handing over the State highways to the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI).

Road maintenance was a major expenditure for the department. A proposal to upgrade State highways to national highways was submitted to the Union Ministry for Road Transport and Highways Oscar Fernandes recently, he said.

24 proposals

The State government has submitted 24 proposals to the Union Ministry for upgrading 4283.95 km of State highways to national highways.

State highways in the coastal, Mumbai Karnataka and Hyderabad Karnataka regions in the State would be upgraded to national highways, according to the Minister.
