Junction in Shivamogga named after Akka Mahadevi

The junction where the 100 Feet Road meets Savalanga Road, near Ravindra Nagar locality in the city has been named by Shivamogga City Corporation after poet Akka Mahadevi. The junction will henceforth be called ‘Shivasharane Akka Mahadevi Circle’.

The name plaque of the junction was unveiled by the pontiff of Murugha Mutt Shivamurthy Murugha Sharanaru at a programme in the city on Sunday. Speaking on the occasion, he said that Akka Mahadevi was a great poet of the Sharana movement, who articulated her views on issues related to women liberation and against superstitious beliefs in vachanas composed by her. Addressing the gathering, Mallikarjuna Murugharajendra Swamiji, pontiff of Bekkinakal Mutt, stressed on the need to develop Udutadi and Balligavi, the birth places of vachanakaras Akka Mahadevi and Allama Prabhu, respectively, into places of tourist attraction.

Member of Rajya Sabha Ayanur Manjunath, Shivamogga MLA K.B. Prasanna Kumar, MLC R. Prasanna Kumar, pontiff Basava Marulasidda Swamiji were present at the event.
