N. Muthukumar, Chairman, CII Mysuru Zone, has stressed the need to adopt and promote ecologically sustainable business growth models. Going the green way not only address ecological issues and concerns, but also makes good business sense, he said.

He was addressing CII’s awareness programme on Green Companies here on Wednesday.

Measures such as energy efficiency, use of renewable energy, reusing and recycling waste, using every drop of water efficiently, and rainwater harvesting have to be undertaken and adopted to full extent possible.

Companies must also explore new opportunities in green products, green buildings, biofuels, and green technologies such as nanotechnology, he said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Make in India: Zero defect and Zero effect’ remark on Independence Day in 2014 came as a clear message that the country would not compromise on its commitment towards environmental protection.

Mr. Muthukumar urged all industries in Mysuru to take proactive steps by aligning their business operations towards green growth and benefit from these initiatives.

U.K. Shenoy, convener, Manufacturing Panel, CII Mysuru, claimed that CII GreenCo Rating system is the “first-of-its-kind in the world” and is evoking excellent response from the stakeholders. He informed that GreenCo Rating defines and assesses the performance of companies on green front and also highlights the way forward to facilitate world-class competitiveness through green strategies.

“Till date, over 170 companies across several sectors are working on GreenCo certification. This includes 56 GreenCo rated companies ranging from bronze to platinum level,” he said.

He also mentioned that Mysuru city has achieved the distinction of becoming the cleanest city in the country and urged industries to take proactive steps and help Mysuru become a model “green city”.

He informed that Bengaluru international airport is the first company in India to be certified under GreenCo rating. Hindustan Unilever Ltd. and JK Tyre and Industries Ltd. and Vikrant Tyre Plant are the first companies to be GreenCo rated in Mysuru.

Several companies such as ACC Kudithini, ACC Thondebhavi, and Mphasis Mangaluru are certified and companies such as Tata Motors Dharwad, Zuari cement and Toyota Kirloskar are working for certification in Karnataka, he said.

The awareness programme was marked by sessions on case studies on Life Cycle Assessment (LCA); Energy Efficient Industrial Lighting Solutions; GreenCo Journey at JK Tyre; Latest technology in continuous emission and ambient air quality monitoring.
