Lokayukta Justice, Y.Bhaskar Rao said that an independent judiciary is necessary for India whose one third population lives Below Poverty Line (BPL).

Delivering inaugural address in a one day seminar on “The National Judicial Appointment Commission Bill, 2014” at the Vidyodaya Law college here on Saturday, Mr. Bhaskar Rao said that with a population of 1.2 billion which is multi-lingual, multi-cultural, independent judiciary is necessary so that people have faith in the judiciary and it is the right of the people under constitution.

He said without public faith no judiciary can survive and function.

He said independent judiciary is an important pillar of the democracy, the lack of which will only hamper the progress of democracy.

Independent judiciary is the basic requirement of a democratic system and the process of weakening the judiciary is a serious blow on democracy.

Independence of the institution and independence of individual judges both go hand in hand.

Advocate General, Prof. Ravivarma Kumar said that 50 percent of posts of judges in the Supreme Court must be reserved for women as they are 50 per cent of the total population of the nation.

Speaking at the seminar, Mr. Ravivarma Kumar said that there is not a single judge in the Supreme Court belonging to Schedule Caste or Schedule Tribe which the judiciary has not addressed.
