The Vrikshalaksha Andolana has opposed the proposal to construct a mini-hydel project at Ganeshpal in Sirsi taluk.

In a press release here on Saturday, the andolana office-bearers said that the Kare Power Resources Private Ltd. had sought permission to blast boulders in the area despite repeated protests by the people here against it.

The Deputy Commissioner has sought the opinion of the Superintendent of Police, Department of Geology and Mining, Karnataka State Pollution Control Board and the Assistant Conservator of Forests Sirsi.

The andolan said that the area came under a bio-diversity hotspot and it was illegal to take up any project there. It should be cancelled, the former chairman of the Western Ghats Task force Anant Ashisar said.

Thousands of people gathered here to protest against the proposed hydel project in March 2013 and again in March 2015 a panel of green organizations of the district met the Deputy Commissioner at Karwar and urged to cancel Ganeshpal project forever.
