A 20-year-old woman was allegedly set on fire by her in-laws for dowry at Kodalhangarga village of Aland taluk in Kalaburagi district on Thursday morning.

The victim, Sharadabai, has been admitted to the district government general hospital in Kalaburagi

Ravindra Gotur, father of the victim, told presspersons at the hospital that his daughter married Veeranna Bhalkenavar, a resident of Kodalhangarga village in May last year. The Gotur family hails from Yekkanchi in Kalaburagi taluk.

Ravindra alleged that after marriage, Sharadabai’s in-laws started demanding ₹ 1 lakh and 50 gram gold more as dowry. “We spent around ₹ 1.5 lakh for marriage besides giving ₹ 1 lakh in cash as dowry. When I expressed my inability to give the demanded amount, they started torturing my daughter,” said Ravindra, adding that he received a call from her on Thursday narrating her ordeal.

He said that his daughter was allegedly set ablaze early on Thursday morning. The police recorded her statement, in which she alleged that she was burnt by her husband Veeranna and in-laws Neelamma and Gundappa Bhalkenavar, for dowry.

Aland police have registered a complaint against the three who are absconding.
