About a dozen human skulls were found dumped at a vacant site in Vijayanagar 2nd Stage in the city on Friday.

While the pourakarmikas were cleaning the area, they stumbled upon the skulls and alerted the locals. Residents, who gathered at the site, found that the skulls had been stuffed in a gunny bag and dumped along with construction waste.

A team of police personnel from the jurisdictional Vijayanagar police station visited the spot, pressed a dog squad into action and took the skulls for forensic examination.

A police official said a suo motu case has been taken up. “We will be carrying out an investigation. Though the skulls appear to be very old, we will be subjecting them to a forensic examination to ascertain the age,” an official said.

However, they suspect the skulls were used for study by a medical institution and may have been disposed off after use.
