A 16-year-old-girl was raped allegedly by the owner of a petty shop at a tanda in Pavagada taluk in Tumkur district on Sunday.

According to the police, the girl had gone to the shop to buy betel leaves for her father around 8.30 p.m. on Sunday. The shop owner, Dharma Naik (36), took her behind the shop and allegedly raped her. After the girl told her family about the incident, elders in the village pressured the family against informing the police. However, her brother filed a complaint with the Thirumani police on May 21.

The police are on the look out for Dharma Naik, who is absconding since May 20.
