A large number of candidates and supporters flocked to nomination filing centres across the district on Monday, the last day for filing nominations for the zilla and taluk panchayat elections.

Though some candidates aspiring nomination by mainstream parties — Congress, BJP and JD(S) — had filed their nomination papers, they returned to the centres after receiving party tickets.

Scrutiny of papers will be held on February 9, while the last date for withdrawal is February 11. The actual number of candidates in the fray in each zilla and taluk panchayat constituency will be known after the last date for withdrawal.

Elections to 49 zilla panchayat and 187 taluk panchayat seats will be held on February 20.
