A farmer, whose house and crop were destroyed six months ago, committed suicide by hanging himself at his residence at Somanahalli in Kadur taluk on Wednesday. The deceased Chandra Naika is survived by wife Premabai and two children.

The farmer had five acres of coconut farm. Three borewells in his farm had dried up. Besides that, his house and copra were gutted in the accidental fire, causing him a huge loss. His wife told the police that he had borrowed loan for agricultural activities from microfinance firms, banks and private individuals.

Unable to clear the loan as the yield from his farm had come down drastically, he had also pledged gold jewellery.

Singatagere police have registered an unnatural death report.
