Wild elephants damaged sugarcane crops in Maddur taluk, Mandya district on Sunday.

A herd of eight elephants destroyed sugarcane crop on several acres in several villages in Maddur taluk on Sunday.

Sources in the Forest Department said the wild elephants entered Maddur from Savandurga and Makali forest areas in Ramanagaram district.

They destroyed the crop on land belonging to Piddegowda, Nagaraju, Chikkonu, Nagesh and Ravi at Thoreshetty Halli, Bettadasana Doddi, Mudigere and surrounding areas, the officials said. The officials said they would drive the elephants back to Makali forest.

The Forest Department has requested people to stay away from their fields.

According to the department, nearly 25 personnel were monitoring the elephants’ movement.
