The Commissioner for Public Instruction has issued a public notice to put to rest the prevailing confusion over schools that have the “minority” tag.
Those schools with “minority” tag can claim exemption from providing 25 per cent reservation to underprivileged children under the Right to Education Act, 2009.
“It is clarified for the information of the general public that only schools that have the certificate issued by the competent authority depicting the ‘minority status’ are eligible to claim exemption,” says the notice.
It goes on to say that anyone found to be misleading the public by giving false information are liable to face action. “Mere self-declaration of minority status by any school will not confer any right to claim exemption from the provisions of the Act,” says the notice issued by S.R. Umashankar, Commissioner for Public Instruction.
The notice says that the last date for submission of application under the RTE quota in private schools is February 5.
All schools including ICSE/CBSE affiliated schools will have to comply with the provisions of RTE, the notice adds.
