Encouraged by the initial success of the drive ‘operation pig’, the Mandya City Municipal Council (CMC) is contemplating impounding the cattle found on the streets, if their owners continue to leave them at public places.
The municipal council has said that it would launch the ‘operation cattle’ drive from December 13 here.
Stray cattle menace has been persisting here as the cattle owners are still leaving them on the streets. The animals have been causing inconvenience to motorists and pedestrians. Therefore, on several occasions, the CMC had requested the cattle owners to set up proper shelters for their animals. However, the owners had not taken the warnings seriously so far.
Municipal Commissioner N.M. Shashikumar has warned that strict measures would be initiated against such animals, a communiqué from the Department of Information and Public Relations said.
Mr. Shashikumar has urged the people to set up proper shelters for their cattle within seven days. If the direction is not followed, the CMC would take a tough stance, he said.
Leaving cattle on the streets is an offence under certain provisions of the Karnataka Municipal Corporations Act. Therefore, the CMC would impound stray cattle from December 13, a senior CMC official said.
“The CMC had recently launched a drive against pigs. Now, the people have stopped leaving their pigs at public places. We have been inspired by the result and decided to launch a similar drive against stray cattle,” the official said.
The cattle owners, after milking, drive their cattle out for grazing.
Only a strict measure can bring in discipline among cattle owners. Therefore, it had been decided to impound stray cattle from public places/streets in all 35 wards, he said.
