Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy on Monday appealed to the Centre to ask the 15th Finance Commission to base the allocation of SDRF (Sate Disaster Response Fund) on the natural disaster vulnerability risk profiles of the States.
He submitted a memorandum to Home Minister Rajnath Singh in New Delhi on Monday.
Explaining how Karnataka was prone to natural disasters besides facing 13 droughts in the last 17 years, the Chief Minister pointed out that despite such high vulnerability, the State had been allocated SDRF of only ₹1,527 crore for five years from 2015-16 to 2019-20. But in the same period, other States such as Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Gujarat had been allocated ₹8,195 crore, ₹6,094 crore, ₹4,847 crore and ₹3,394 crore respectively, he said and urged him to enhance the SDRF.
He brought to Mr. Singh’s notice that Karnataka had already submitted a comprehensive memorandum on May 7, 2016 requesting for additional allocation of ₹12,272.21 crore as Central assistance for taking up drought-proofing measures.
