Cellphone jammers have been installed at the Ballari Central Jail as part of beefing up security arrangements. They started functioning on Republic Day.

No one on the jail premises and also in the periphery will be able to use cellphones now.

The government proposed to install jammers following apprehensions that the inmates in the central jail, some of who are notorious criminals, were using cellphones for their activities.

Ten jammer units have been set up inside the precincts of the jail premises, spread over 20 acres, at an estimated cost of around Rs. 4.5 crores.

Ballari Central jail is the third after Parappana Agrahara in Bengaluru and Central Jail Mysuru, to get cellphone jammers, jail authorities said adding that the jammers were functioning effectively.
