Yielding to pressure, Bangalore University has decided not to ask gold medallists and rank holders to pay for their medals and certificates.
The decision was taken at a special Syndicate meeting on Wednesday. Sudesh V., in-charge Vice-Chancellor, said after the meeting that Syndicate had taken this decision after opposition from students and parents.
The Hindu had reported that students were being asked to pay ₹500 as part of the cost, with the the remaining amount to be funded by donors.
Mr. Sudesh said those who have made the payment would get a refund.
“It was a unanimous decision by all the Syndicate members. The university will bear the cost,” he said.
Around 179 students are set to receive gold medals and cash prizes.
The university gives students gold-plated medals with 1.3 grams gold and 20 grams of silver.
