Contract workers of the Bharath Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) staged a protest here on Tuesday.

S.A. Devaraj, district unit president of the Karnataka BSNL Non-Permanent Workers’ Union alleged that the workers serving on contract for more than 10 years are being denied the benefits for which they are legally entitled. The non-permanent workers are being exploited by the contractors who employ them. There has been delay in payment of monthly wages to them. Contractors have also failed to abide by the existing laws in payment of their contribution to the provident fund, he added.

He urged the management of BSNL to ensure that wages are paid to contract workers by the 5th of every month. Enhancement of monthly minimum wage to Rs. 15,000, withdrawal of the ceiling on payment of bonus and deduction for provident fund, regularisation of the services of the contract workers were some of the demands of the protesters.
