The State government, on Tuesday, announced a steep hike in salary for doctors and specialists working in government hospitals, community health and primary health centres across the State.

Irrespective of the years of service, monthly salaries of MBBS/BDS qualified doctors have been hiked by Rs. 5,000, while salaries of doctors having postgraduation and diploma degrees have been hiked by Rs. 25,000. Salary of super-specialty doctors has been increased between Rs. 30,000 to Rs. 35,000 a month.

The overall salary hike ranges from 5.7 per cent to 47 per cent.

The revised salary would come into effect from July 6, 2015, Minister for Health and Family Welfare U.T. Khader told the Legislative Assembly on Tuesday.

Salary of MBBS doctors (0-6 years of service) has been increased from Rs. 54,989 to Rs. 59,989 (9 per cent), while salaries of doctors having PG and diploma degrees (0-6 years) have increased from Rs. 59,780 to Rs. 84,780 (41 per cent). Salary of super-specialty doctors (0-6 years) increased from Rs. 62,980 to Rs. 92,989 a month (47 per cent).

However, the salary of ayurvedic doctors, nurses and other paramedical staff has not been increased.

Over 2,000 government hospital doctors had struck work and even resigned seeking pay parity with Medical Education Department doctors in October 2014.

The Minister said the government would also soon fix stipend for MBBS doctors doing rural service. Currently, hospitals have been facing shortage of 331 MMBS doctors, Mr. Khader said while making a terse statement in the House.

C.T. Ravi (BJP) and Shivalinge Gowda (JD-S) demanded hike in salary of ayurvedic, nurses and paramedical staff working in all government health centres in the State. In his reply, Mr. Khader said, “It is easy to talk in the House, but difficult to implement decisions.”
