Bhagya, representing Doddamagge Zilla Panchayat constituency in Arkalgud taluk, and Lakshmana Gowda of Dudda ZP constituency in Hassan taluk were elected president and vice-president of Hassan Zilla Panchayat unopposed for the third term here on Wednesday. M.V. Jayanthi, Regional Commissioner, conducted the elections.
They will continue in office till February 16, 2016. Both are from the Janata Dal (Secular) party. The president’s post was reserved for general (woman) and the vice-president’s post for general category. Bhagya had submitted two sets of nomination papers. Two other members, Hemavati and Kusuma, had seconded their names for the post.
Lakshmana Gowda had submitted one set of papers. As there was no more contenders for the posts, Ms. Jayanthi declared them having won unopposed. The former ZP president Ambika Ramanna and other members greeted the newly-elected officials.
Ms. Bhagya, speaking to presspersons after her election, said that during her tenure she would concentrate on providing drinking water in rural areas and improving roads. Lakshmana Gowda said he was elected to the post with the blessings of former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda and other leaders of the JD(S).
