Baby dies for want of medical treatment

A three-month-old baby boy died allegedly due to non-availability of medical services in private hospitals in Hassan. The baby, born to parents of Siddaiah Nagar in Hassan, died on Tuesday morning while being brought to Hassan from Tiptur after it developed respiratory problems.

Nadim and Farhana have been married for last three years. Farhana, a native of Tiptur in Tumkur district, gave birth to the boy three months ago and she was staying put in Tiptur. As the baby developed breathing problems she brought it to Hassan on Monday and went in search of private nursing homes. As private medical establishments were closed on that day in support of the protest opposing amendments to the KPME Bill, she took the baby to Hassan Institute of Medical Sciences and got the baby treated. She returned to Tiptur by evening, according to her relatives. The baby developed complications on Monday night again, forcing the mother take the baby to Hassan on Tuesday morning. The baby died even before it could reach Hassan.

Mohammed Asif, a relative, said if the baby was given proper care in Tiptur on Monday itself it would have survived. “The baby did not get proper care even after it was brought to Hassan on Monday when private hospitals were closed”, he said.

When the issue was brought to the notice of Deputy Commissioner Rohini Sindhuri and HIMS director B.C. Ravi Kumar, in a press conference, they said they would collect information if the parents had approached the government hospital for treatment.
