August 18, 2016 02:26 am | Updated 02:26 am IST - MANGALURU:

With about 750 postgraduate seats in various streams remaining vacant in its institutes, Mangalore University has re-invited applications for 2016-17.

The last date for submission of applications is August 26.

According to K.M. Lokesh, Registrar (Administration), the admission process will be completed by this month-end. Seats are vacant at the main university campus, the postgraduate centre at Chikka Aluvara in Kodagu, and at its three constituent colleges — University College and University Evening College at Hampankatta, and Field Marshal K.M. Cariappa College in Madikeri. Both general and payment category seats are available in science, arts, commerce and education streams.

According to the registrar, students can also apply for the government quota PG seats in the university’s 28 affiliated colleges. As many as 1,183 seats are vacant in those colleges.

The Food Science and Nutrition (M.Sc.) course introduced this year has received good response. Of the 16 seats available in general category, 15 have been filled. But of the eight seats under payment category, just one has been taken.

Few takers

But another M.Sc. course introduced in 2016-17 — in Environmental Science — has not found many takers. Only five students have opted for the course in the general category (16 seats). All eight payment category seats are vacant.

Likewise, there have not been many takers for the Geoinformatics course, with only four of 16 general category seats filled. There have been no takers for M.A. in Hindi and Sanskrit at University College, while only four students have taken up the Kannada course at the Chikka Aluvara campus (30 seats). The M.Com. course at University College is in good demand, with all 76 general category seats filled. At University Evening College, all 30 general category M.Com. seats have been filled. In Chikka Aluvara too, all 35 seats have been filled.

Results out

Meanwhile, according to A.M. Khan, Registrar (Evaluation), the university has now announced the results of the postgraduate final semester examinations conducted in May.
