Around 250 devotees of Thipperudraswamy temple in Pavagada taluk of Tumakuru district were hospitalised due to diarrhoea and vomiting on Tuesday night.

District Surveillance Officer Purushotham said around 2,000 devotees had eaten puliyogare and curd rice served at the temple on Tuesday evening as part of a three-day fair. After a few hours, around 250 devotees rushed to the Lingadahalli public health centre complaining of diarrhoea and vomiting.

The taluk administration opened a health unit at Rangasamudra village and treated the devotees. Some were shifted to Lingadahalli PHC and 46 patients who were serious were shifted to Pavagada taluk hospital.

Dr. Purushotham said most of them have been discharged and others are recovering in the health centres.

Water infection

He suspected water infection and contaminated items might have resulted in food poisoning. Samples of the food have been collected and sent to a laboratory for tests.
