Twenty persons have been arrested on the charges of stone pelting at Afzalpur town in Kalaburagi on Tuesday after the birth anniversary celebrations of 18th century ruler Tipu Sultan led to a clash between two groups.

Clashes erupted when the procession carrying a portrait of Tipu Sultan reached the main street of Siddharameshwar Chowk and a group of people led by BJP Yuva Morcha taluk president Sunil Shetty tried to disrupt the celebrations. The police resorted to lathi-charge to restrain the groups throwing stones at each other.

Police sources said that 13 of those arrested were members of BJP Yuva Morcha’s taluk unit including its president Sunil Shetty. Several members who participated in the celebrations suffered minor injuries during stone-pelting. Adequate police personnel have been deployed in the town, and the situation was under control.
