In one of the major power shutdowns in the district, mainly in Vijayapura city, people had to spend two nights in darkness. Gusty winds and rain that lashed the district on Friday damaged many electricity supply equipments.

According to reports, some 17 transformers were burnt and nearly 90 electricity poles fell down. Owing to this disaster, the city plunged into darkness for nearly two days.

Though the power supply was restored in some parts of the city on Saturday night, nearly half of the city suffered as power could not be restored. In some parts, though the power supply was restored in the early hours of Sunday, it again went off till noon after a couple of hours.

The power disruption literally created havoc in the city. ATMs did not function as even the back-up supply of electricity was exhausted. Business activities were affected.

While the situation is the city was worse, the power in rural areas went off for only 24 hours.
