Volunteers of different organisations, under the auspices of Ramakrishna Mutt of Mangaluru, cleaned up Hampankatta on November 12.

This was part of a 40-week Swachhta Abhiyan launched by the mutt under Phase IV in the city last Sunday.

Six groups cleaned up the footpath and road in front of the University College. Handbills on hygiene were distributed to all shopkeepers. The volunteers cleaned the compound walls of the University College and Government Wenlock Hospital.

Students of S. Madhusudan Kushe High School and volunteers from Scouts and Guides, Nivedita Balaga, were among those who participated. About 150 volunteers took part in the drive.

Tidying up 50 villages here

At the same time, the mutt, in association with Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat, took up the cleanliness drive in 50 villages of the district.

Equipment for cleanliness drives, T-shirts, banners, and the like, were also given to all volunteers in the villages. MRPL and Nitte institutions are supporting these drives through their sponsorships, a release from the mutt stated.
