As part of the preventive action in the wake of the upcoming parliamentary elections, the State police detained 13,365 anti-social elements across the State and produced them before the jurisdictional courts.
While the police recommended the externment of 100 of them to the jurisdictional magistrate, 50 others were booked under the Goonda Act and remanded in judicial custody. The rest of them were released after obtaining an undertaking that they would maintain good behaviour, Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) M.N. Reddi said here on Friday.
Briefing the media on the precautionary measures taken up by the police, Mr. Reddi said that the State police had also registered rowdy-sheets against 433 people who were involved in communal disharmony, especially moral policing which had increased in coastal region of the State in the recent past.
Moral policing“Moral policing has been occurring in the coastal regions of the State with some anti-social elements taking law into their own hands and using violence or intimidation, such people will not be spared,” he added.
Four hundred and fifty others, who were involved in crimes against women, had also been listed as anti-social elements.
In the last one year, the State police had identified around 10,000 persons as anti-social elements, which takes the total number of such elements in the State to 26,838 from the previous 17,935, Mr. Reddi added.
