Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Saturday announced 'Amma Kudineer Thittam' - a new scheme for supplying drinking water to those who cannot afford to buy purified drinking water from private players.

"The rich and the affluent in Chennai are buying water purified through the reverse osmosis process. It is the desire of the poor and the deprived sections to use that water too. I have ordered to implement a new scheme 'Amma Kudineer Scheme' to fulfil their desire," Ms. Jayalalithaa said in a statement.

In the first phase, 100 places with the most number of poor people would be identified within Greater Chennai Corporation limits and water supplying points would be established. "20 litres of purified water would be supplied a day for a family," she said.Based on the response received, more supply points would be established and smart cards would be issued to beneficiaries, she added.
