A day after the Supreme Court upheld her marriage with Shafin Jahan, Hadiya submitted a leave application at the homeopathy college in Salem, where she is studying, and left with her husband for her home State Kerala on Friday.

“The Supreme Court judgement validating my marriage has only proved how much respect society accords to women and also the weightage the words of women carry,” said Ms. Hadiya, whose marriage with Jahan was annulled by the Kerala High Court. She had converted from Hinduism to Islam to marry Jahan.

Ms. Hadiya, who is continuing her mandatory house surgeon internship at the Sivaraj Homeopathic Medical College and Research Institute near Salem city for completing her Bachelor in Homoepathy Medicine and Surgery (BHMS) course, has been in an upbeat mood ever since the three-judge Supreme Court Bench on Thursday set aside the High Court order.

Interacting with journalists at her college during the interval session on Friday, Ms. Hadiya said the Supreme Court judgement had given her the freedom to go with her husband. “I will be applying for leave to spend a few days happily with my husband,” she said earlier in the day. She was quick to add that she would return to the college soon to continue her internship.

Ms. Hadiya was happy that the Supreme Court judgement had come on the day when the world was celebrating International Women’s Day.

Earlier, the Supreme Court, while hearing the case, had directed Ms. Hadiya to re-join the college to continue her internship for completing the degree course. Complying with this, she rejoined the college on November 28 last. Since then, she has been staying in the college hostel in Salem under the direct supervision of the principal.
