A16-year-old athlete was assaulted by a person in Jehanabad railway station on Wednesday.

“I was returning from Gaya district, where I had gone to participate in the selection of a track event,” the 16-year-old girl told The Hindu on the phone.

“The train I took was scheduled to reach the Jehanabad station around 5.30 p.m. When I got off, the assailant held my collar, used abusive language and began showering me with blows. I had a bag and other luggage with me. When I kept my bags aside and decided to retaliate, he ran away. His brother was watching the incident from a distance,” she said.

The girl said she knew the attacker. “On many occasions, he would pass remarks and harass me when I go out.”

Based on the girl’s complaint, the police registered a case against 22-year-old Nitish Kumar and filed cases against him under Section 354A, B, C and D, pertaining to using assault or criminal force on a woman with the intent of outraging her modesty and under Section 307 (attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code.

“I want him [Nitish] to be punished strictly. If he is not, he will do it again. What should women do in that case? Stay indoors?”

Police on Thursday arrested a youth, identified as Nitish Kumar, son of a railway gangman, from his home, Jehanabad Superintendent of Police Shyali Dhurat said.
